Global retail media ad spend is projected to land somewhere between $165 billion and $185 billion in 2026, up from roughly $140 billion just two years earlier. In the US alone, spend is expected to hit around $69-71 billion this year, growing nearly 18-20% year over year, more than four times the growth rate of the broader digital ad market. Retail media has already overtaken linear TV in some markets and is on track to rival social media spend within a few years.
Why It's Growing This Fast.
The pitch is simple, and it's working: retail media sells ad space next to confirmed purchase intent, backed by first-party data the retailer already owns. Amazon's advertising business alone reached close to $68-69 billion in 2025. Walmart Connect grew somewhere between 37-44% globally. Average return on ad spend across the retail media platforms tracked by Skai has held steady at roughly 6x for over a year, a number few other channels currently match.
It's Not Just Amazon And Walmart Anymore.
The category is fragmenting fast. Grocery chains, pharmacies, marketplaces and even non-retail categories, travel, rideshare, financial services, are all launching their own "commerce media" networks. The average advertiser now works with around six different retail media networks, and that number is expected to keep climbing. Off-site retail media, ads placed on other publishers' sites but powered by a retailer's shopper data, is growing even faster than on-site placements, close to three times the rate in some markets.
The Catch Nobody Advertises.
More networks means more fragmentation. Every retailer has its own dashboard, its own measurement standard, its own definition of "attributed sale." Brands running six-plus retail media partners are discovering that comparing performance across them is its own full-time job, and most aren't set up to do it well yet.
The WeFuse Angle.
We treat retail media the way we treat every channel, as one part of a single measurement view, not six separate silos telling six separate stories. If your brand sells through retailers, this channel is no longer optional. The question is whether you're running it as a strategy or just topping up a budget line because a rep asked nicely.
